GOLFER Graeme McDowell has taken the first steps on a journey which he hopes will lead to glory when The Open Championship returns to Royal Portrush next summer.
The Rathmore clubman enjoyed one of his best tournaments in some time at the weekend, finishing well up the leaderboard at the Genesis Open in Los Angeles.
The 39-year-old led after the opening round and was still in the hunt following a one under par 70 on Saturday, leaving him just two shots behind Bubba Watson.
However, a six over par 77 in Sunday's final round saw him sign off for a two under par for the tournament, ten shots behind eventual winner Watson.
Nevertheless, there were signs that the 2010 US Open champion is rediscovering his form ahead of an important two years.
