DALRIADA School got the better of local rivals Coleraine Grammar School in an exciting game under floodlights at Coleraine Rugby Club last Wednesday evening.
The 'home' side began positively, enjoying lots of possession and territory in the early stages, and came close to opening the scoring from a penalty but the effort from close range went wide.
Coleraine Grammar continued to exert pressure on the visiting side but Dalriada's defence remained firm and they were rewarded for their determination by going down the other end of the pitch and opening the scoring.
A period of pressure resulted in a line-out five metres from the Coleraine line and Dalriada made the most of their opportunity. A perfectly executed line-out move saw the ball end in the arms of Curtis Pollock who dived in for a fine score.
Matthew Kennedy failed to add the conversion but nevertheless Dalriada led by 5-0 after five minutes.
Nerves settled by this early score, Dalriada continued to exert pressure on their opponents and a penalty from the boot of Kennedy saw the Ballymoney men increase their lead to 8-0 soon after.
Coleraine Grammar School, though, weren't about to roll over and they quickly responded with a try of their own, a well-worked try under the posts being converted to reduce the gap to a single point at 8-7.
