DERRY hurling goes from strength to strength as Kevin Lynch's emerged as the top Under 18 team in Ulster against Tyrone champions Eire Og of Carrickmore who had beaten Down champions Portaferry convincingly in the semi-final.
For a long time in this game they kept the pressure on the Derry champions but, led by centre half Richie Mullan and full forward Tiarnan McHugh, the Lynch's pulled away to win by double scores. Played in fine conditions at Ballinascreen this annual tournament is unoficially the Ulster minor championship with the champions of eight of the nine counties taking part.
Lynch's got off to a dream start scoring a goal with the very first attack of the game. Stiofin Tracey gained possession from the throw in before finding Cahir Higgins in space. The latter's shot was dropped by Eire Og keeper Ryan Haughey, allowing Eoin McKeever to pounce sending the loose ball into the net.
Cahir Higgins continued his impressive early form hitting the game's first point in the second minute after being played in by Tiarnan McHugh.
McHugh opened his own account in the third minute with arguably the score of the game. Ruairi Rafferty outpaced his opponent claiming the ball out in front before finding the big full forward's run. McHugh made no mistake in sending the ball over the bar from out on the sideline in one fluid movement.
The Tyrone champions finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth minute, Ruairi Slane firing over a free, and their tally was doubled in the next attack as Oran McKee tapped over after ferocious work from Thomas McCallan.
