SLAUGHTNEIL remain on course to successfully defend their Ulster title following a stunning 2-17 to 0-17 semi-final win over Donegal champions Kilcar in Omagh last Saturday evening.
After taking a 0-6 to 0-1 lead by the 17th minute, Slaughtneil were pegged back to a single point as Paddy McBrearty hit three in a row and then Andrew Mclean left the minimum between the sides in the 21st minute.
Cormac O'Doherty nicked a point for the Emmetts but another three point salvo seemed to have given Kilcar the initiative at 0-8 to 0-7 going into the break. At that stage it seemed Kilcar, having weathered the early storm, had got the measure of Slaughtneil - but not so.
Second half goals from Shane McGuigan and Christopher Bradley, just a hint of controversy about this one as it seemed Bradley may have thrown the ball into the net, sealed it for Mickey Moran's men. Despite a superb ten point haul from Paddy McBrearty it was not enough to bring Kilcar close enough to causing a shock on the night.
A crowd of just over 3,000 saw Cormac O'Doherty put Slaughtneil ahead straight from the throw-in but a Paddy McBrearty free, his first of ten, including five from play and five from frees, had Kilcar level within the first minute.
Slaughtneil went on to dominate the first quarter, hitting five in a row - Christopher Bradley getting three and Se McGuigan and Meehaul McGrath adding one each as they led 0-6 to 0-1 by the 17th minute. However, during that period Antoin McMullan came to Slaughtneil's rescue, saving at point blank range from Paddy McBrearty.
