IT was a very successful weekend for Derry teams in the Ulster club football championship with all three involved coming through their respective quarter-final ties successfully to march on to the semi-final stage.
Reigning Ulster senior champions Slaughtneil narrowly defeated Tyrone title holders Omagh, 0-10 to 0-8, at a wet and windy Celtic Park.
Also on the Celtic Park bill last Saturday evening, Newbridge, managed by former Derry star Paddy Bradley, turned in another great second half performance to dispense with Fermanagh side Belcoo 3-16 to 1-9 in the Intermediate grade.
To complete the hat-trick of Oak Leaf wins, Derry city side Doire Trasna had a resounding 4-9 to 0- 10 victory over Armagh champions Ballyhegan in the Junior championship quarter final.
A crowd of almost 3,500 witnessed a real dogfight in difficult conditions between the champions of Derry and Tyrone in Celtic Park last Saturday evening with the Oak Leaf men from Slaughtneil still on course to successfully defend their provincial crown.
