COLERAINE Seconds got their season up and running with a hardfought 2-0 win over Castle Seconds at the weekend.
Coleraine's opponents had finished third in Junior Five last year, just missing out on promotion, so Coleraine knew they would be in for a difficult hour.
Rain was pouring down as the match started but both teams soon settled into their rhythm. An early foray by Castle was comfortably dealt with by the home defence and a quick counterattack saw the ball switched quickly through the midfield of Emma Jamison and Aurora Watson and into the circle where Helen McCallum and Carol Anne Agnew pressured the defence.
A shot saved by the Castle keeper went straight on to a defender's foot but before the whistle could go for a corner the ball was confidently swept into the net by Zoe Campbell, making it 1-0 to Coleraine with just four minutes gone.
The game continued at a fast pace throughout the first half with both teams creating chances. Coleraine won a number of penalty corners but were unable to convert them whilst some great running on and off the ball by Helen and Carol Anne opened opportunities for Zoe Campbell and Alex Black to get in the circle.
