Derry dumped out of Ulster Championship thumbnailTyrone’s Ronan McNamee loses his footing as Derry’s Niall Loughlin closes in.

THE script for this Ulster Championship tie had been well enough rehearsed and in truth both sets of players stuck more or less to their pre-determined roles with the result that there was little or no drama as Tyrone eased to a 0-22 to 0-11 victory over Derry at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon. All the signs in the lead up to this first round game pointed to a comfortable Tyrone victory with Derry very much cast in a supporting role only - and that's exactly how it turned out. Indeed, the eleven-point margin was exactly the same as last year's first round tie at the same venue.
Tyrone were always in control after easing to a 0-5 to nil lead by the thirteenth minute with their captain Sean Cavanagh in dominant form throughout the game, firing over a seven point haul, six coming from frees.
Tyrone went on to lead by double scores, 0-10 to 0-5, by the half-time break. Derry did make a bit of a contest of it in the early stages of the second half as they brought the deficit back to just three points at 0-11 to 0-8. At that stage it seemed Derry might just ask a few questions of the Tyrone side but the brief rally soon subsided.
Indeed, Derry did have a couple of chances in that third quarter to put a bit more pressure on Tyrone but they shot three wides and when the visitors hit three points in a row between the forty eighth and fifty first minutes to go six clear at 0-14 to 0-8 the writing was on the wall for Derry.
With Tyrone unloading their bench to good effect it was soon double scores, 0-16 to 0-8, as David Mulgrew and Darren McCurry fired over fine points.
