Emmets first up in league for Eoghan Rua

Thursday, 6 April 2017

EOGHAN Rua could not have asked for a tougher start to their 2017 Division One football league campaign as they host Derry and Ulster champions Slaughtneil this Sunday afternoon in the first round of games at Pairc Eogain Rua.
Of course, the Emmetts will also be keen to shake off the gut wrenching St Patricks Day All-Ireland club final defeat to Dr Crokes by getting back into the thick of the action on the domestic front.
There has been no change for either team on the managerial front with Mickey Moran and John Joe Kearney in charge at Slaughtneil while the two Seans - McGoldrick and McLaughlin - continue with their charges at Coleraine.
The Eoghan Rua men have had a busy enough build-up to the start of the league in Derry. The club entered the Ulster League for the first time and had a very successful campaign culminating with a win over Dungiven to lift the trophy a couple of weeks ago.
They have also been in action in the North Derry 13-aside competition, the Dr Kerlin Cup, one of the oldest knockout competitions in the county. Just last weekend they beat Claudy to reach the final for the very first time.
So, while Eoghan Rua have been busy in their build-up, Slaughtneil have had a bit of a rest following their exertions at a much higher level. Eoghan Rua have yet to secure a league victory over Slaughtneil and that might well still be the case after Sunday's first meeting of the new season.
