‘No regrets’ says Michael

Thursday, 16 February 2017

THE new manager of Portstewart Golf Club wasn't even born when previous incumbent Michael Moss first took up the role - which gives you just some idea of how long he was in charge!
Over the course of an incredible 40 years, the Belfast native has helped oversee changes which catapulted the north coast club from a fairly small concern to a global business with an estimated annual turnover of £2m.
It's been a busy old time but one Michael looks back on with great affection and no regrets - despite never for one minute believing he would last in the job for almost 40 years.
“I was young, I was 27 years of age, and when I started I never thought I'd be here 39 years later. But I suppose once you've done 10 or 12 years then that's going to be your career.
“Once you've raised your family and you've fallen in love with the area and fallen in love with the golf club it's part of your DNA. Why would you want to leave?"
A Campbell College old boy, Michael graduated with an English degree from Trinity College Dublin before entering the world of PR with the former Coleraine Borough Council, not the traditional route into golf club management one might think.
And, you'd be right.
“I came into the job completely cold," admits Michael, who was clearly a quick learner.
“For example, I was here about a month when Jimmy Madill - Maureen's father, who was the Honorary Treasurer at the time - rang me and said 'we'd better sort out the VAT return.'
“He said you could pull out the inputs and the outputs. I went off to find out what he was talking about but I hadn't a clue.
“The business end I've learned - but the PR end, dealing with people, getting them on the golf course - that I could do!"
