Eoghan Rua two from two in Ulster League

Thursday, 9 February 2017

EOGHAN Rua made it two wins from their first two outings in the Ulster Senior Football League Group A stage with a 3-11 to 1-8 win over Dungiven at The University grounds last Sunday afternoon. Most of the damage was done in the first half, indeed in the opening quarter, when the home side swept into a 2-4 to 0-1 lead before going on to take a 2-7 to 0-1 advantage into the break.
Dungiven had the better of the third quarter when they took a foothold around the middle, outscoring Eoghan Rua 1-5 to 1-2, to pull the deficit back to nine points at 3-9 to 1-6. The final quarter proved to be very evenly contested with neither side getting the upper hand trading two points each, that first half period of dominance on the scoreboard proving to be the difference at the finish.
Dungiven got off to a flying start, winning the ball from the throw-in and quickly transferring forward to Ryan McElhinney who flashed it over the bar for the opeing score inside 20 seconds.
That suggested Eoghan Rua could be in for a torrid time but it proved to be Dungiven's only score of the opening half as the Coleraine men dominated thoughout that first 30 minutes or so.
Their opening score came in the second minute when Richard Carey did well to put Colm McGoldrick in for a well taken goal.
