Robert Dunlop Memorial Statue Fund continues to gain momentum

William and Michael Dunlop are actively involved in the fund-raising to ensure a statue of their father Robert Dunlop is erected in a specially dedicated memorial garden in Ballymoney.
FOLLOWING the untimely death on May 15, 2008 of road racing legend Robert Dunlop during the 250cc practice for the North West 200, the decision was taken to erect a memorial statue in Ballymoney in honour of Robert and his achievements.
A memorial garden has been donated by Ballymoney Borough Council and it is expected that it will take around £60,000 to commission and erect the statue of Robert.
One of the main driving forces behind this venture is Liam Beckett, a life-long friend of Robert Dunlop, for whom he was mechanic for 21 years and already a number of events including a celebrity football match has raised the total to around £18,000.
With a large number of events planned for the forthcoming months building towards this year's 2010 International North West 200, Liam and the fund raising committee have joined forces with Chronicle Sport to bring you a unique totaliser.
Liam explained: "Everyone involved with the Robert Dunlop Memorial Statue Fund raising committee has been working very hard since the committee was set up in September. £60,000 is an awful lot of money to raise, however, as everyone knows the Ballymoney community are a very close community and are more than generous. They have supported the fund-raising from the start and we can't thank everyone who has contributed in any way enough.
“The family and myself discussed this recently and we want to ensure that everyone knows how the fund raising is going and we want total transparency throughout the entire fund raising project.
“We want to ensure than everyone remains interested in this project and it also lets the public see the progress we are making and what is required for us to reach our final target.
