THE mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has joined with the Taoiseach and the President of Ireland in congratulating the Ireland Women's Hockey squad - captained by Coleraine girl Katie Mullan - on their World Cup heroics.
Ireland, who began the tournament in London as the second lowest ranked team, shocked the world by reaching the final where they were beaten by the number one ranked team, The Netherlands.
Paying tribute to the squad, which includes former Ballymoney Hockey Club stalwart Megan Frazer, Cllr Brenda Chivers said they had written their names into Irish sporting history.
"I wish to offer my warmest congratulations to Coleraine girl Katie Mullan, her team-mate Megan Frazer from Ballymoney and the whole team on their wonderful journey in the World Cup," said the mayor.
"I have no doubt the team has a very bright future ahead."
