A LOCAL developer has lodged plans for a 60 bedroom hotel just outside Bushmills.
Details of the 5m scheme were revealed by the Chronicle last summer. However, the proposal is now accompanied by further plans to provide park and ride facilities for the Giant's Causeway.
The council is currently evaluating a number potential sites around Bushmills to address worsening congestion problems at the World Heritage Site and around the village.
Their preferred option is the expansion of the centrally located Dunderave site, although that idea has come under fire in recent weeks because it could lead to the loss of local amenities including a football pitch.
The latest private sector proposal, just outside the village facing Dunluce School, aims to offer 'park and ride' plus 'park and stride' options - utilising the footpath next to the historical railway linking the village to the Causeway.
Both the hotel and parking plans have been lodged by locally-based developers Portnaboe Ltd.
A spokesman for the developer said they could have the car park up and running by in time for the summer season.
“Should planning permission be granted promptly we believe we could be operating by this summer, thereby alleviating the acute congestion affecting Bushills and the Giant's Causeway," he said.
