CAUSEWAY Coast and Glens Borough Council is to consider bringing in a private firm to run Coleraine's proposed new leisure centre.
Replacing the outdated Railway Road facilities has been identified as a priority capital project by elected members with the new build expected to cost 15m-20m.
Leisure centres across the borough currently lose around 1.9m per annum, leaving ratepayers to cover the shortfalll.
That's why a number of different outsourcing schemes are being considered, the Chronicle understands.
Last month members of the council's Leisure and Development Committee travelled to England to look at funding models that could help with deficit reduction.
The most radical involves a specialist firm of leisure centre operators agreeing to take on a lease and day-to-day running of the facilities, generating revenue through customer charges. Their focus would be to increase footfall and reduce losses.
