A DRAMATIC final bid to halt planning approval for a £20m hotel and spa resort outside Portstewart has failed.
In a surprise last minute appearance before Causeway Coast and Glens Planning Committee, MLA Jim Allister insisted the decision should be deferred.
He told members on Wednesday, January 24, that he'd received documents just two hours earlier which indicated senior council officers supported the development.
The resulting conflict of interest, he said, should disqualify the councillors from handling the planning decision.
However after a closed doors discussion with the council's solicitor, elected members voted nine votes to zero in favour of following the recommendation to approve.
Afterwards, Mr Allister said legal action was "highly likely".
Earlier, members heard how the scheme was expected to provide a "vast economic opportunity" for the area.
