R&A hotel plan boost

Thursday, 18 January 2018

GOLF'S governing body has endorsed the latest proposal for a luxury hotel in Portrush.
Plans for the 65m five-star Dunluce Resort an Spa were lodged last month.
The developers hope to be up and running in time for the Open Championship in July 2019.
The R&A are the tournament's organisers and, along with USGA, set rules and play a major role in developing the sport.
It was the body's Championships Executive Director, Johnnie Cole-Hamilton who wrote to Causeway Coast and Glens Council registering support for the development.
“Preparations for The Open are well under way and one of the many logistical matters which we need to consider is the local area being equipped to provide accommodation for players, R&A staff and officials or the many thousands of fans visiting the event," he wrote. "It is for this reason we write to support the above proposal."
Mr Cole-Hamilton points out the hotel is only "a matter of miles" from Royal Portrush and "of a scale and quality that will service the needs of visitors."
He adds: "(It) will in our opinion strengthen the support network for The Open in this area and provide additional high quality accommodation which I am sure can only benefit both our event and tourism in the local area generally."
