Former Mayor steps down thumbnailAlderman Maura Hickey. CC51-93s

FORMER Mayor Alderman Maura Hickey will step out of the political arena tonight (Tuesday), The Chronicle can exclusively reveal.
The mum-of-three, who lives in Portstewart, will attend her last council meeting at Cloonavin, after serving as an SDLP councillor on Coleraine Borough Council and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council for 12 years.
In June 2016, after becoming the first Nationalist Mayor of the new council, Maura pledged to "act as an instrument of healing and reconciliation between communities in the area."
She said: "I've had an exit strategy planned for the last two years and have been mentoring a brilliant person to take over. It is easier for me to hand over the mantle knowing that person will do an excellent job.
“The area I now represent is so much larger than before. I will be 69 on my next birthday and I don't want to be standing for election again when I'm 70.
“I'm not burnt out or fed-up but I feel that it is the right time to leave and a great opportunity for my successor. I also want to enjoy more time with my children and grandchildren.
