Freedom first for Olympic rowers thumbnailThe Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Cllr Joan Baird OBE, pictured with Olympic medal winning rowers Richard Chambers and Alan Campbell after they had been conferred with the Freedom of the Borough at a special council meeting on Friday.

TWO of Coleraine's three Olympic medal winning rowers have spoken of their great pride at being presented with the Freedom of the Borough by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
The pair - Alan Campbell and Richard Chambers - were bestowed with the honour at a special meeting of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council on Friday.
The third - Peter Chambers, who was unable to attend - was presented with the Certificate of the Conferment of the Freedom of the Borough in abstentia. It is expected he will receive his award when he returns to Coleraine later in the year.
They become the first Freemen of the Borough, created following the amalgamation of Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Moyle councils in 2014. The original notice of motion was proposed at a meeting of council just over a year ago by Cllr William McCandless.
Speaking at a ceremony in the Cloonavin, Alan Campbell - who memorably won bronze in the single sculls at London 2012 - said it was an "absolute honour" to be recognised.
“I am proud to be from the Causeway Glens and Borough Council area which is a very special part of the world," he said.
