THE National Trust has defended its decision to introduce parking charges at Portstewart Strand during the winter months.
Two weeks ago the charity announced on Facebook parking tariffs would be "reduced" from November 1 until the new season in March.
That statement immediately prompted a backlash from locals who pointed out the beach had traditionally been free to use in the winter time.
Dozens have taken to the Trust's Facebook page to lodge objections.
Typical of the responses was one poster who said: "Next they will be charging for walking."
Another said: "I hate to say it, but I will not be using the Strand anymore. Will go elsewhere."
Portstewart-based councillor, Mark Fielding said local people were asking why the National Trust had suddenly starting to charge off-peak having never done so before.
