A COLERAINE care home will close before Christmas leaving 16 staff without jobs and families of the 11 residents facing the prospect of finding their loved ones new accommodation.
A 102-year-old woman is among those currently being cared for at Edenmore private nursing home on the Castlerock Road.
The home, which can cater for up to 15 residents, has been open for 28 years.
Owner Ella O'Reilly, who runs Edenmore with her business partner Florence Dhand, said yesterday (Monday): "It's so sad for staff and residents. I've assured families that I won't close our doors until every resident has a new roof over their head."
Mrs O'Reilly added: "Unfortunately the business is no longer viable; we have empty beds because we are no longer getting enough referrals for residents, whose needs we can cater for.
“Because of our size, we have always prided ourselves in being very homely. There have been many challenges over the years but I've had the most wonderful job and loved every single minute of it.
“Our belief has always been that just because someone is getting old doesn't mean they can't laugh and have fun."
She said: "One member of staff has been here for 27 years; to have to tell employees they are being made redundant before Christmas and families that they are going to have to find alternative accommodation for their loved ones is heartbreaking.
“It's devastating for them but unfortunately we have no choice. The building, which was previously Terrace Row Manse, will be put up for sale. I may retire, or maybe look for another job."
