Keeping hunger from the door thumbnailMelanie Gibson, manager of the Causeway Foodbank makes an appeal for donations of food as supplies are running out due to a high demand. WK44-25TM

HARD-UP parents are going to bed hungry to ensure that their children have food in their bellies.
That's the shocking revelation from the Manager of Causeway Foodbank which provides emergency parcels to tide families over times of crisis.
Melanie Gibson, who set up the Foodbank in April 2013, said: "It breaks my heart but I know of parents who are going hungry to feed their children.
“It doesn't bear thinking about, in this day and age. But there are mummies and daddies out there who are going to bed with no food in their bellies so their children can eat; otherwise it's a case of having the leftovers - if there are any."
Since its launch the Coleraine-based organisation, which helps cash-strapped people in the town as well as Ballycastle and Limavady, has provided more than 50,000 meals.
Melanie said: "Foodbank usage from January to September this year increased by 19 per cent, compared with the same period last year.
“The demand was so great a few weeks ago that our warehouse shelves were almost bare and we put out an urgent appeal for non-perishable items such as long life milk, rice, tinned meat and T-bags. The response was amazing and we received almost two tonnes in donations. We were blown away by people's generosity."
