Universal condemnation! thumbnailDUP MLA Maurice Bradley.

INTRODUCTION of the controversial Universal Credit (UC) benefits system should be postponed, amid grave concerns about the hardships many families could face in the run up to Christmas.
In a rare show of agreement local DUP, Sinn Fein and SDLP MLAs have all called for its initial introduction in Limavady on Wednesday to be delayed to allow difficulties experienced in Britain to be resolved.
After Limavady it will be rolled out across Northern Ireland over the next 12 months, coming to Coleraine just before Christmas.
East Londonderry MLA Maurice Bradley said the decision to introduce UC to Coleraine less than two weeks before Christmas is "utter madness" while SDLP MLA John Dallat said UC would create "horrendous problems" for many families.
Sinn Fein's Caoimhe Archibald said UC "wasn't fit for purpose" and that delays in payment "could drive people further into poverty".
The Department For Communities (DFC) sought to reassure people by saying that help was available for claimants filling out new digital applications.
