A COLERAINE family has been left heartbroken after their pet pony was shot dead by a fox hunter, just yards from their doorstep.
A mum-of-six, from Castleroe, told The Chronicle how year-and-a-half old Shetland pony Maisie's lifeless body had been found in a field, close to her mother Bluebell, after a man told her 19-year-old daughter there had been an accident.
The 48-year-old said: "The man came to our door and said he had shot Maisie while fox hunting. He said he would ensure that a claim form was sent out. The man left his details and said he had contacted the police.
“We had gone to Dublin early that morning and when my daughter rang me she was absolutely devastated, all I could make out were the words 'shot' and 'dead.' I didn't know who, or what, had been shot and was dead.
“My daughter had thought Maisie was sleeping in the field; we later discovered that she had been shot through the eye. Maisie's mother was very distressed; she was covered in blood and frantically trying to get Maisie to respond. It was heartbreaking to watch."
The woman, who does not want to be identified, recalled how her four daughters, still living at the family home, had been traumatised by the sight of Maisie.
