‘Underground’ hotel bar plan thumbnailPortballintrae Bay with the Bayview Hotel in the background.

A NORTH Coast hotel has lodged an application to create an underground bar and function room, sunk into the steeply sloping seashore above Portballintrae's bay.
Accessed via a tunnel under the coast road, the glass fronted extention and terrace will have only a "very modest effect" on the environment, according to the developer.
The plans were lodged by the Bayview Hotel earlier this year and are currently under consideration by planners at Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
However, the proposal has attracted significant opposition from local residents and holiday home owners.
Among their objections are the visual impact of a modern building on the coastal landscape and the replacement of a grassed area in front of the existing hotel with car parking.
