Pioneers’ legacy will live on thumbnail

A FORMER Mayor is calling for commemorations to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the 1718 migration from the borough to America.
DUP Councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan also wants a permanent feature to mark the memorable milestone and links forged between Causeway Coast and Glens Council and the town of Londonderry in New Hampshire.
Originally called Nutfield, the area was renamed by settlers including families from Garvagh, Kilrea, Aghadowey, Macosquin, Dunboe and Ballywillan.
Cllr Knight-McQuillan said: "Many people from the Bann valley left on five ships loaded with not only people and goods but hopes and dreams of a whole new world. This was a major event which must have been a massive effect on the lives' of those who travelled, as well as those left behind at a time when farming life was very difficult.
