AN application to hold an endurance motocross racing event on Portrush's East Strand has received the backing of an influential council committee - despite reservations over possible damage to the award winning beach.
The proposal - lodged by the Foyle District Motor Cycle Club - would see upwards of 100 riders on motorbikes and quad bikes compete over two days on a marked beach course with man-made jumps and artificial sandy hills.
If successful, the event, planned for late October, would be the first event of its kind to be held in Northern Ireland, though similar events have proved popular in England.
Members of the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council's Leisure and Development Committee were asked to consider the request at their monthly meeting following a briefing from council officers.
The Mayor, Alderman Maura Hickey, said she believed committee should accept a recommendation to agree to the proposal, particularly as a number of mitigation measures were in place to deal with potential concerns.
