‘I’m lucky to be alive!’
Thursday, 16 March 2017
A PORTSTEWART man has been left 'dumbstruck' by the generosity of people who donated thousands of pounds to give him a second chance at life after losing all of his personal possessions to a fire in London.
Richard Nicholl has told The Chronicle he considers himself "enormously lucky" to have escaped the fire alive and is "heartened" at the response of people, many of whom he barely even knows.
A gofundme page created by one of Richard's friends has helped raise more than £1600, although he says this is just the tip of the iceberg.
“People I know really well have come to my aid," says the 22-year-old, who works in legal publishing. "People I know through work and people I have met just the once have helped. Even those people I thought did not think very much of me wanted to do their bit.
“People have been far too kind. Their kindness and generosity has been overwhelming. I hear it said a lot that people in society are drifting away from each other, especially in places like London but I can't say I agree with that. These people haven't given a second's thought to doing their bit to try and help.
