Early Christmas present for the Port! thumbnailThe Dunluce Centre in Portrush.

AROUND 60 new jobs are expected to be created following the acquisition of Portrush's Dunluce Centre by a leading leisure development company, the Chronicle can exclusively reveal this week. Successful applicant HMW Properties paid almost 1m for the council-owned building which it plans to transform into a state of the art family entertainment centre, complete with climbing walls and a Surf Club.
The company is also investigating future development on land bordering the Dunluce Centre at Metropole Park at the entrance to the resort.
The sale represents a major coup for Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council which took the decision to sell the centre earlier this year.
It could also act as a catalyst for further regeneration of the town in the run-up to the return of The Open golf championship to Royal Portrush Golf Club in 2019.
Another of council's leisure facilities - Waterworld - is currently being considered for sale while it is believed council is keen to develop sport and community facilities on the eastern side of the peninsula at the Recreation Grounds.
The HMW Properties' bid was one of four received for the Dunluce Centre, considered a jewel in the tourism crown of the former Coleraine Borough Council when it was built in 1993 but which was losing money annually until a decision was taken to close it three years ago.
The successful applicant scored highest against a number of set criteria - including financial and a commitment to maintaining the site for leisure and tourism purposes - and has been warmly welcomed by long-serving local councillor Norman Hillis.
