AN 88-year-old Portstewart woman will take the plunge in icy seas on Christmas Day to raise funds for a cause close to her heart.
Anne McCartney will throw caution to the winds, along with other hardy souls, to boost the coffers of the Coleraine Hospice Group.
Organisers have revealed that Anne will be the eldest fundraiser at this year's Operation Freeze Knees at Portstewart Strand.
Anne, who moved to the North Coast from Belfast following her retirement, hopes other members of her family will join her at noon on December 25.
She told The Chronicle: "Weather permitting, most days I take a dip in the Herring Pond in Portstewart. I've lost loved ones to cancer, including my very dear friend Evelyn McCullough, who used to join us for our Herring Pond dips.
“I will be taking part in this year's Christmas Day fundraiser in Evelyn's memory; she was an amazing lady and joined Freeze Knees participants several times."
Anne, who ran a chemist's shop in Belfast opened by her father, also makes patchwork quilts for charity and has just raffled one for the Hospice.
Fundraisers are being sought to join her for the annual Christmas Day charity event. Anne said: "I've taken part for the last four years; I'm hoping my niece Mandy will join me again. Last year three generations of our family took part. It's an incredible cause."
