COLERAINE'S famous trio of Olympic medal winning rowers will be the first ever 'Freemen' of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough after a unanimous decision taken last week.
Concerns that 'procedural issues' might scupper the proposal to confer the Freedom of the Borough on Alan Campbell, Richard and Peter Chambers proved unfounded as every party endorsed Cllr William McCandless's Notice of Motion.
Terms like 'indomitable spirit, 'excellent ambassadors', 'unique achievements', 'fantastic success', 'dedication' and 'passion' were used to describe the Olympians at last Thursday's specially convened council meeting.
Proposing the Notice of Motion, UUP Cllr William McCandless said: "Our young Olympians should have been honoured in 2012, it was an oversight but we have our opportunity to address it now.
“The NOM I have brought forward is for recognition of the effort these young men have put in for the years of dedication and practice from early teens - hard physical work, application, devotion and passion to their chosen sport and also to recognise what they have had to deprive and deny themselves of. If they had taken a different direction at University they could have followed a much more lucrative career.
“The award of Freedom of the Borough should not be given just because someone has reached a particular level, it should be awarded because an individual has 'gone the extra mile', and has stood 'head and shoulders' above others.
“These former pupils of CAI and members of Bann Rowing Club have promoted Coleraine and the North Coast wherever they have competed and indeed have helped put our area on the map internationally.
