THE Irish Open's thousands of spectators and worldwide TV audience of millions are set to provide the north coast with a timely tourist boost. But, while last Friday's news that Royal Portrush will host a world class golfing event was met with universal approval, there have been accompanying calls for action over the town's run-down appearance.
First minister Peter Robinson insisted the government would ensure the tournament will showcase Northern Ireland's potential as a premiere tourist destination.
The venue will continue to focus the golfing world's attention on the region's glorious spell at the pinnacle of the game over the last two years, following major wins for Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke.
While all three golfers endorsed the decision to award one of the world's top courses with such a high profile event, there were also calls on the business community to embrace a golden opportunity.
Tourism Minister Arlene Foster urged the local firms to "raise their game" in pursuit of the long term economic benefits.
